Response to Intervention: Why Care About RTI?

Program Description
As educators we share the goal of teaching students knowledge and skills that they will need to be productive and independent adults and to be life-long learners in an ever- changing world. We approach this goal in an environment that seeks increasing quality and accountability, from No Child Left Behind and AYP, to the educational benefit requirements of state and federal special education law. It is no longer feasible to approach the learning problems of students on a reactive, one student at a time basis. This seminar will focus on a proactive, systemic model of problem solving called Response to Intervention. Response to Intervention is a multi-tiered educational intervention model that employs universal screening to identify at risk students and provides multiple tiers of interventions beginning with differentiated instruction in the regular classroom, and if progress monitoring indicates continued need, core curriculum plus supplemental instruction and/or core curriculum plus intensive instruction. The latter may involve referral for a comprehensive evaluation for special education services. We will explore the key components in a Response to Intervention model, incremental steps to implementation, necessary supports and a self-assessment to see how this approach may interface with initiatives/resources already available in your district or school. Regular and special education teachers, school psychologists, school social workers, and counselors will find this seminar valuable. Each participant will receive a copy of the written materials prepared by Sharon LaPointe.
