Program Discription
Patients with psychiatric disorders have an increased rate of cardiovascular morbidity and ortality compared with the general population. Research from small studies is beginning to how atypical antipsychotics can lead to metabolic and endocrine disturbances such as weight ain, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and diabetic ketoacidosis. Learn what monitoring, teaching and intervention should take place to decrease metabolic/endocrine complications.

Continuing Education Credits
Certificates of Attendance will be awarded at the end of the program.

 Pharmacists: Educational Services is approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE Universal Number is 402-000-06-005-L01. Up to 3.5 contact hours (.350 ceus) is provided for those participating in the program and completing registration materials.



 Nurses: Educational Services is an approved provider of continuing education by the New York State Nurses Association, which is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Advanced Practice Nurses

 Dietitians: Educational Services, ED001, is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) from 6/8/05 to 6/7/08. Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive 3.5 (CPEUs) for completion of this program. At the conclusion of the presentation the participant should be able to:

  • Identify pharmacokinetics of atypical antipsychotics.
  • Compare and contrast atypical antipsychotics as to their relationship with Metabolic Syndrome.
  • Identify pathophysiologic presentation of Metabolic X.
  • Identify treatment modalities - traditional and complementary - for Metabolic Syndrome
